Do Mushroom Drinks Have Caffeine? It Depends on the Format
Do mushroom drinks have caffeine? Some have none, and some have more than a large coffee. Both answers are true because "mushroom drink" now covers three different products: mushroom coffee, sparkling mushroom energy cans, and caffeine-free mushroom sodas. The mushrooms aren't the variable. What they're mixed into is.
Here's how to tell which one you're holding, with the numbers.
Do Mushrooms Themselves Contain Caffeine?
No. Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, Chaga and the other functional mushrooms don't contain caffeine. In an October 2026 review of mushroom coffee blends, Dr. Şule Eren of Acıbadem put it plainly: "Mushroom powder has no caffeine of its own" (Acıbadem International, 2026).
So if a mushroom drink has caffeine, it came from somewhere else: coffee beans, green tea, yerba mate, guayusa, or added caffeine. The ingredient list tells you which. That's useful, because it means the answer to "how much caffeine?" is always on the label, never hidden in the mushroom.
How Much Caffeine Is in Mushroom Coffee?
Mushroom coffee usually has less caffeine than regular coffee, but it isn't caffeine-free. Most blends replace part of the coffee with mushroom extract, so the caffeine drops roughly in proportion to how much coffee is left.
A registered dietitian's April 2026 roundup for Ochsner Health listed popular blends at about 45mg, 48mg and 70mg per serving (Ochsner Health, 2026). Caffeine Informer lists one widely sold instant mushroom coffee at about 50mg per 8 fl oz, and notes brewed mushroom coffee can run closer to 100mg a cup (Caffeine Informer).
For context, the FDA puts a 12-ounce cup of regular brewed coffee at 113 to 247mg (FDA, 2024). Mushroom coffee is a lower-caffeine coffee. It's still coffee. We compare the two formats in more depth in our complete guide to mushroom drinks.
Do Sparkling Mushroom Energy Drinks Have Caffeine?
Yes, and often a lot. The fastest-growing mushroom cans on grocery shelves are built as energy drinks first, with mushrooms layered on top. One leading brand sells two caffeine lines, 85mg and 222mg per can, both from green tea, according to a November 2025 FoodNavigator profile (FoodNavigator, 2025).
That top figure sits near the high end of the FDA's 41 to 246mg range for a 12-ounce energy drink. It's more than many cups of mushroom coffee, and more than half of the 400mg a day the FDA cites as an amount most adults can have without negative effects (FDA, 2024).
None of that makes these drinks bad. It just means "mushroom" on the can tells you nothing about the caffeine. If you're counting milligrams, or you want a can at 4pm that's 0mg, read the label, not the front of the pack.
Caffeine in Mushroom Drinks: Format by Format
The quickest way to answer the caffeine question is to sort mushroom drinks by what's doing the work besides the mushrooms. The figures below come from the sources cited above; individual products vary, so the label always wins.

| Format | Typical caffeine | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Brewed regular coffee (12 oz, for reference) | 113–247mg | Coffee |
| Mushroom coffee (instant or blended) | ~45–100mg per serving | Coffee |
| Sparkling mushroom energy can | 85mg or 222mg (one leading brand) | Green tea |
| Caffeine-free sparkling mushroom can | 0mg | None |
The pattern is simple. Mushroom coffee is coffee with less coffee in it. Mushroom energy drinks are energy drinks with mushrooms in them. A caffeine-free mushroom can is the only one of the three with no caffeine at all.
How to Tell if a Mushroom Drink Is Caffeine-Free
Check three places on the can or bag: the ingredient list, the caffeine statement, and the word "energy." A drink with real caffeine will list a source such as coffee, green tea extract, yerba mate, guayusa or "caffeine." Many brands also print a milligram figure near the nutrition panel.
The word "energy" on the front is the biggest tell. Products positioned as energy drinks almost always carry caffeine, even when the mushrooms get top billing. "Caffeine-free" printed on the can is the only promise you can take at face value.
While you're reading the label, look at the mushroom amounts too. Some products name the mushroom without saying how much is in there, or whether it's fruiting body or mycelium. We break down the difference on our fruiting body vs. mycelium page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Lion's Mane have caffeine?
No. Lion's Mane is a mushroom and contains no caffeine of its own. Any caffeine in a Lion's Mane drink comes from another ingredient, usually coffee or green tea, so check the ingredient list.
Is mushroom coffee caffeine-free?
No. Most mushroom coffee contains real coffee and typically has about 45 to 100mg of caffeine per serving, depending on the brand and whether it's instant or brewed. That's less than a typical cup of regular coffee, but it isn't zero.
How much caffeine is in a mushroom energy drink?
It depends on the brand. Some sparkling mushroom energy cans contain 85mg of caffeine and higher-strength versions contain 222mg, usually from green tea. The caffeine amount is normally printed on the can.
Does Happie Fungi Fusion have caffeine?
No. Happie Fungi Fusion is caffeine-free. Each can contains 900mg Lion's Mane, 700mg Cordyceps and 400mg Reishi with ocean-sourced trace minerals, at 40 calories and 9g of sugar.
The Bottom Line
Mushrooms don't contain caffeine, but many mushroom drinks do, from about 45mg in a light mushroom coffee to more than 200mg in a strong mushroom energy can. Read the ingredient list, not the front of the pack. And if you want a mushroom drink with none at all, make sure the can says caffeine-free.
